What Really Are Chakras?

Chakras are indeed a part of Eastern culture and philosophy, but these energy centers also have an important role in Western thought. These universal principles can be found in different religions and belief systems all over the world.

Chakras are energy centers within the human body that give us life force. They are like the intersections of our life force within the body, and they regulate the flow of that energy. There are seven universal chakras located within the body, and each one has its own color, element, and state of being.

We each have chakras, and they can influence both our physical and mental health. Because of their location in the body (in the center), they are connected to both the physical and spiritual realms.

There are many ways to unblock your chakras, and some of them involve things like meditation, visualization, aromatherapy, and other ways that any beginner can try and get the benefits. Regardless if you believe in chakras or not! Whether you’re new to this type of practice or just want a refresher on all things chakra, you’ll find everything you need to know about how to balance all your chakras below.

What can block your chakras?

There are several factors that can potentially block your chakras and lead to poor health. Here are some quick examples of things that can cause chakra blockages:

Emotional baggage can be a big contributor to chakra blockages. If you’ve been holding onto a lot of negative emotions from the past and haven’t been processing them, those emotions can get stuck in your body and cause blockages and imbalances in your chakras.

For example, many people who have had a traumatic experience in their past have a lot of fear and anxiety stored in their bodies from that experience. If you suffer from chronic anxiety, it can come from these unresolved emotions that are getting stuck in your energy field and your chakras.

Another common reason for chakra blockages is a lack of self-love and self-care. If you aren’t treating yourself well and caring for your physical, mental, and emotional health, it’s going to show up in your chakras. The root chakra is often the chakra that is the most impacted when you aren’t practicing self-love.

Meditating and getting into a daily practice of self-reflection helps to cleanse and clear your chakras of any blockages. It’s best to do this in the morning as opposed to at night so that you’re starting your day clean and clear.

Top techniques for clearing all your chakras

Balancing chakras come primarily from living a healthy lifestyle. Exercise, meditation, and other health-promoting habits are a good start.

In some cases, you need a lifestyle change to be able to let chakras rebalance. To get you started here are some of the best ways and how to use each of them to help balance all your chakras.

1. Meditations

Meditations are a must if you want to balance all your chakras or any chakra. Clearing your mind and becoming detached from your thoughts and emotions is a great way to become free of past wounds and future anxieties. The fears and anxieties won’t just disappear because you meditate, however, meditating will help create a distance between you and the thoughts that trigger overwhelming negative emotions.

Mindful Breathing Meditation: Nothing out of the ordinary but this can be a very effective meditation. Focusing on your breath in meditation has two major positive impacts. We are usually in a state of mind where we focus all around us except ourselves. Your energies will love it when you focus on something about yourself and you will feel this after a couple of sessions.

And two, your mind will detach from all the daily noise and finally get a break. This is the hardest part as after years of the same thinking patterns your mind will have a hard time letting go. Start small with five minutes a day and gradually increase the time until you make it to at least 12 minutes to help balance all your chakras.

Guided Meditation: Guided meditations come in many shapes and forms. You can choose whichever suits you, but I believe not all guided meditations are equal. I can recommend what worked for me and I believe will work for you as well in helping you unblock your chakras. I have been a follower of Sadhguru long before he became an internet superstar.

The Isha Kriya meditation from Sadhguru is what I believe will have a positive impact on your life if you do it for at least 30 days. Don’t just listen to me though. Just do it and let us know how you feel after 30 days.

Chakra Healing Meditations: To help your chakras you can also try guided meditations specifically about how to balance all your chakras through visualizations and sounds. If you search on youtube this Seven Chakra Guided Meditation does a pretty good job of helping you connect and heal your chakras by using powerful visualizations and sounds.

Trying any of these meditations is a good place to start and help you unblock and heal all your chakras, especially the top chakras such as the Crown Chakra, Third Eye Chakra, and Throat Chakra.

2. Journaling (for emotional healing)

Diary: Simply writing a diary daily can help relieve negative emotions. Personally, I find it helpful to use the old pen and paper and write it down. What to write? From the most mundane things to the most profound and deep things you can write. Just start writing about how was your day or your week and just let the words flow and see where they take you. This simple habit can be a great benefit for your emotional charge and help you heal your chakras as well.

Gratitude Diary: It’s a shame that so many people are always focusing on the negative side of things. Some people have considerably worse things happen to them than others. But no matter what have you been through and I know there might be some dark things – you can still find something good that happened in your life.

Even the small thing of actually waking up today. Or even being able to read this and having access and the possibility to afford an internet connection. Sometimes I also try to think about things that could have easily got wrong in the past but somehow they didn’t. Do this regularly to help heal yourself and help balance your chakras and finally feel human again. Start every day by writing 3 things to be grateful for. Write small things, not big things.

Goals Visualization: Visualizing yourself in the future is another great way to help balance your chakras. While it may sound like a motivational thing if you do it properly I think there are real benefits.

Try to visualize how are you going to feel, how are you going to see life, and the things you will do. It doesn’t have to be material such as the perfect job or having millions of dollars – nothing wrong with those goals but I think visualizing non-material things can be a lot more practical in helping you feel better and help balance your chakras as a consequence.

If you are into coloring books try out this chakra and reiki coloring book with affirmations and help relax and help connect with the spiritual side.

3. How to unblock your chakras using exercise

Exercising is one of the best ways to unblock your chakras. Exercising is said to unblock your chakras because it gets your energy flowing through the body and helps the spiritual energies as well. Exercising is also a great way to manage your stress and boost your mood.

Yoga for chakra balancing: Yoga is another way to unblock your chakras, and it is a great way to manage stress and improve your mood. Yoga is a form of meditation that is said to unblock your chakras by bringing your attention to your body. When you are in tune with your body, you are also more likely to notice when one or more of your chakras is blocked.

Again I am going to Sadhguru to help us in this regard. There are many types of yoga you can try and like before, not all yoga practices are created equal. Based on what Sadhguru says, some yogas might actually be damaging. I sometimes practice the Isha Upa Yoga from Sadhguru on its own or even before starting my gym program as a way to stretch and prepare for weight lifting.

Tai Chi for chakra balancing: Although Tai Chi is long known to help energy centers of our spiritual side, only recently has been something talked about in the context of chakra healing and balancing. A practice that combines mindful breathing and slow body movements, Tai Chi helps bring your energies and focus into the present moment. Making an effort to move slowly while being conscious of your breathing is a great exercise to combat the daily stressors of a fast-paced and do-it-now environment.

Stretching: One of my favorite types of exercises, stretching helps your chakras by helping the blood flow healthily through the body. Take a look at these 25 best stretches for full body flexibility or for a simpler program try out this video about 6 stretches you should do every day. Personally, I focus on the back legs, and neck as I feel these are the stiffest parts that need rejuvenating.

Jogging: This list needs jogging as depending on your five elements personality type jogging can be the best physical exercise you can do to help your chakras heal and balance. You can go here to test yourself to find out what dosha personality you are and after that, you can see which exercise type is best for you based on your Dosha element.

4. Balance Chakras at Home with With a Morning Ritual

To balance chakras at home from the beginning of the day start your day with a morning ritual. Having a set of practices that you do every morning to set yourself up for a successful and balanced day will help your mind and your energies as well.

A morning ritual can include things like setting an intention for the day, reading, meditating, visualizing, or even doing yoga. Rituals are helpful for mental health, setting you up for success, and preventing you from falling into bad habits. This is an easy but effective way to balance your chakras if you are a beginner and can go a long way if you are consistent.

5. Incorporate Scent, Colour, and Sound

Scent: Incorporate scents that are associated with each of your chakras. For example, the scent of rosemary is associated with the third, Solar Plexus Chakra. whilst the scent of basil is associated with the second chakra, which is your Sacral Chakra.

One of my favorites, sandalwood essential oils is associated with the sixth chakra, which is your third eye chakra that is responsible for intuition or being above your feelings and being in a less reaction-based mindset. For more about oils and using the power of scents to balance chakras at home check out my other posts.

Color: Choose colors that are associated with each of your chakras to help heal your chakras with colors. The color red is associated with the root chakra. Orange is associated with the second chakra. Yellow is associated with the third chakra. Green is associated with the fourth chakra. Blue is associated with the fifth chakra. Indigo is associated with the sixth chakra. Purple is associated with the seventh chakra.

You can wear these colors to help align your chakras or you can balance chakras at home by incorporating these colors into your room and house.

Sound: Incorporate sounds that are associated with each of your chakras to help align chakras by yourself. For example, the sound of a bell is associated with the root chakra. Singing is associated with the third chakra. A gong or drum is associated with the fourth chakra. The sound of a rattle is associated with the fifth chakra. The sound of a chant is associated with the sixth chakra. The sound of a whisper is associated with the seventh chakra.

You can listen to these types of sounds on YouTube as ASMR videos for chakra healing or you can incorporate them into your life. Some of them maybe you are already doing to some extent such as thinking out loud in whispering sounds. Or you can try out some drum lessons and see how that goes!

6. Does Acupressure Work with Chakras?

If you are a total beginner to this you can also try to balance chakras at home with the powerful practice of acupressure. Acupressure is an ancient Chinese healing modality that deals with applying pressure to certain points in the body.

Some points are associated with each of your chakras. If you feel like a certain chakra is unbalanced, try applying pressure to the corresponding point on the body. For example, if you feel like your third chakra is too strong, try applying pressure to the third chakra acupressure point.

There are many different points on the body that are associated with your chakras. The easiest way to find these points is to use an acupressure chart such as this one. Once you’ve found a chart, you can also take a look at videos such as the one below to help you better perform this technique and increase your chances to heal your body and your chakras too!

7. Don’t Forget to Breathe

If you’re a beginner and doing any of these chakra healing activities remember to breathe calmly and consciously. Breathing is an essential part of meditation and many other chakra-related activities. Breathing is a way to relax and clear your mind, which is key when you’re trying to touch your chakras and help remove blockages.

Silent breathing is when you’re breathing but not making any noise. Many people find that silent breathing helps them get in touch with their chakras and focus on the activity that they’re doing.

Use the video above to help balance your chakras through breathing techniques focused on chakras. Alternatively, you can have a look at the Wim Hoff Breathing Method or Sadhguru’s Chit Shakti Meditation for Success.

8. Spend time in nature to align your chakras

Nature is another great way to get your chakras back into balance. Doing some forest bathing -external-link- allows you to get away from the hustle and bustle of your daily life, which helps you get in touch with your feelings.

balance chakras at home nature walks - women walking away into a trail in the forest

Any type of nature activity is great for chakra balancing – sitting by a river, walking, or even going on a hike.

When you spend time in nature, you’re surrounded by chakra-balancing plants and you’re in a peaceful environment that allows you to get in touch with yourself.

Whilst you must get out of your home, spending time in nature is another beginner-friendly way to get your chakras back into balance by yourself.

9. Unblock your chakras using art and music

Art Therapy and music therapy are other great ways to help align your chakras and remove blockages. If you are a creative person, not expressing your creativity might be an excellent way to balance your chakras and improve your overall mental stability. If you believe you can start a new creative endeavor, or maybe resume an old hobby that you stopped doing now it’s time to take action.

Bringing things to life through your own vision and understanding is a sublime but powerful way to express yourself more profoundly than words can. Self-expression is important in unblocking chakras and many art forms such as music can help align your chakras.

If you are not into a creative flow, simply get interested in new music genres, new types of films – or whatever art you follow regularly and try to reframe it by experiencing it from a new perspective you didn’t experience before.

Personally, the easier way to express myself creatively is by strapping my Sony camera and going out. I do landscapes mostly but recently I started playing with macro photography as well. I think photography is one of the easiest ways to get creative.

Whilst a camera phone takes high-quality pictures having something that you are solely using for creative endeavors is more practical in my opinion.

That’s it for now, back to our stuff. And it’s time now for our last chakra healing tools: foods.

10. Foods good for balancing your chakras

Foods can also be a great aid in helping your body, mind, and spirit. When it comes to chakra healing here are some of the foods you’ll want to add to your diet depending on the symptoms you might have for blocked chakras.

Muladhara Root Chakra Foods:

Eat root vegetables, grains, nuts, and organic meats to help support Muladhara and heal any root chakra-related symptoms such as kidney stones, constipation, bowel issues, or any other digestive and lower body symptoms.

Svadhishtana Sacral Chakra Foods:

Related to sensuality and creativity good foods for Svadhishtana are usually high-water foods.

Melons, sweet berries, orange citrus fruits but also mangos, nectarines peaches, persimmons, butternut squash, or sweet potatoes make for a good list for healing sacral chakra symptoms such as lack of creativity, lack of connection with your partner and balancing your sensibility for things around you both physical and spiritual.

Manipura Solar Plexus Chakra Foods:

Related to personal power, drive, or self-esteem you can balance this chakra by eating salty, pungent, and sour foods. Orange foods, spicy foods, and sea foods are the main categories to help solar plexus chakra.

Pineapple, bananas, Ginger, sour berries, fermented foods, garlic, onion, turmeric, cinnamon, kelp, Irish moss, and spirulina are a good list of the best foods to help heal solar plexus symptoms such as lack of motivation, indecision, low self-esteem, lack of will power and poor self-control.

Anahata Heart Chakra Foods:

Physically related to heart and chest issues an imbalanced heart chakra can also create emotional issues such as past trauma, fear, or anxiety.

Eat astringent and bitter foods such as pomegranates, green juices, salads, broccoli, cabbage, celery, green spices, and even coffee and dark chocolate to help heal the heart chakra symptoms and help to understand yourself and create the right inner environment for self-love and appreciation.

Vishuddha Throat Chakra Foods:

Associated with upper body symptoms related mainly to the thyroid, this is also the chakra of communication and self-expression. The best you can do to heat a throat chakra with foods and help you gain your integrity is to eat blue-colored foods such as blueberries, and blackberries, drink herbal teas, and drink enough water.

Ajna Third Eye Chakra Foods:

Located at the top of the head between the eyebrows a blockage in the Ajna can cause migraines, and eye or ear issues, while on deeper leave this chakra is associated with intuition, wisdom, and even extra sensory perceptions.

Spend time in sunlight or in meditation and help heal Ajna with dark-colored foods such as grapes, eggplant, purple kale, and plums, and drink lavender tea to help connect with your intuition and become more self-aware.

Sahasrara Crown Chakra Foods:

The only chakra located outside of your body is the chakra that connects you with the universe and the higher consciousness or infinite wisdom. Contrary to healing all other chakras, opening this Crown Chakra requires fasting and detoxification.

Not just physical but also mental detoxification from distractions and dopamine-triggering activities such as social media.

You can also incorporate ancient herbs such as myrrh, and frankincense in the form of essential oil or incense daily and most beneficially during meditation and prolonged fasting.

How to Eat Properly for Better Food Assimilation

One more thing I want to mention is to also be mindful about the way you eat as this will affect how the food affects your body and chakras. Eating in a peaceful quiet, and stress-free environment will not only help with better digestion and nutrient assimilation but also help you on a deeper level.

How exactly?

It has been shown that water changes on a molecular level depending on the environment. The high water content of foods simply means that you will ingest a stress-charged meal, whilst eating peacefully will result in a positively charged food that enhances the healing benefits, especially the benefits of healing all your chakras.

How do you know if your chakras are opening?

If you start implementing any of the chakra balancing techniques it takes time and patience to experience the benefits. Other techniques might work better for you than others and you might experience the symptoms of chakra healing faster.

You will undoubtedly observe the positive effects either in the body or mind if you will be paying close attention to your thoughts and emotions. Here is a quick list of things to come once you start working on your chakras:

  • Stronger sense of power and meaning in your life; increased clarity and better perspective of the external and internal environment, especially when healing the upper chakras such as the Ajna (Third Eye) chakra or Sahasrara (Crown Chakra).
  • A better understanding of the good and bad in the world and the possibility to detach and not be taken away emotionally by whatever happens in the world or your own life.
  • Awareness of your strengths and weaknesses and better judgment on how to use them optimally in work-related situations of either individual or collective endeavors.
  • An overall sense of being at ease in the social contexts and easier to express yourself in ways that do not bother others but also do not create guilt for yourself – especially when healing the Vishuddha (throat chakra).
  • More connected with your intuition and more willing to trust it without a doubt.
  • Less anxious or fearful about going forward and trying new things.
  • Better focus, productivity, and creativity.
  • Less compulsivity and more patience rather than having to do everything at once.
  • Less self-doubt and a desire to try new things and grow.
  • A better connection and a desire to connect with old friends and family members, especially when opening your heart chakra.
  • Positive optimistic and hopeful in your future and in achieving your dreams, especially when healing the solar plexus chakra.
  • Increased sexual drive and enhanced connection with your body and needs especially when dealing with Sacral chakra.
  • An increase in meaningful dreams helps reveal things in yourself and your life.
  • More energy better sleep, stronger immunity, and faster healing.

While in the beginning, the positive effects may be sublime, consistency will pay off and signs of healing chakras will become more and more obvious to the point where it will feel natural to be experiencing the most positive qualities you possess.

If all goes well, you will start to notice sensations in your body. These are signs that your chakras are unblocking and that energy is flowing freely again. These sensations can include things like warm or tingly feelings, increased energy, or even a release of pressure in your body. If you notice these sensations, it is a good sign. It is possible to unblock your chakras without feeling anything, but it is not very likely.

Final words

As you can see balancing all your chakras can be a daunting task. But just because you have symptoms of chakras being out of balance that doesn’t mean that you have to tackle each and one of them. But it is useful to know which one to focus on and maximize your efforts by first doing the techniques and remedies for that specific chakra.

In my own experience, trauma is a big factor, as also daily stress. It’s even worse when both are your day-to-day reality.

Spending time in nature and removing yourself from distractions such as social media, television, etc. can be a great helper in balancing all your chakras and help improve your day-to-day experience of life.

Healing your spirit and balancing your chakras can be done by making use of the body and the environment such as exercising, spending time in nature, and in silence and meditation. However, the key is to be consistent.
